When children first arrive at your nursery, how do they feel? For children and their families to feel drawn in, your setting must be as homelike as possible. Décor should be tasteful. I don’t know anyone who fills their home with bright plastic furniture – do you? Consider how to make the room peaceful. Bring nature in. Fabric adds a lovely touch. Each area should have its own mood. You might choose to drape pastel voile over the book nook and an exuberant cultural print for your role play area.
Making the environment child-friendly takes imagination and teamwork. It’s a lot of fun too! When you think you’ve achieved it, get down on the children’s level and ask yourself: Do the spaces invite me in? If I were a child here, would I feel truly “at home”?
