Cleaning and disinfection of Community Playthings products
Our products are made primarily of solid wood with a cleanable finish. The government’s current guidance on cleaning in nurseries is suitable for Community Playthings products, however these are some recommendations on how to support the products’ longevity:
Cleaning - Clean all surfaces with soap and water as recommended. Do not use excessive water, and dry surfaces immediately. Leaving water or cleaning agent on the surface may damage the finish.
Disinfecting - We recommend hydrogen peroxide or quat-based disinfectant sprays or wipes. Examples: Clinell wipes; any Dettol disinfectant.
Follow manufacturer’s instructions for dilution, application and contact times for all detergents and disinfectants.
DO NOT USE abrasive cleaners, alcohol, aromatic spirits, pine oil or iodine-based products as these may damage plastic and fabric, or stain the wood finish.
Specific product cleaning instructions and temporary discounts
Recent government guidelines advise practitioners to “declutter” in a number of ways such as removing soft furnishings, soft toys and toys that are difficult to clean (such as those with intricate parts).
Here are some things you may not know about the clean-ability of our products:
- Outlast products
- Fuzzy panels and shelf backing
- Soft seating
Unit blocks are a fantastic resource but are not coated with a finish, so here are some important tips for cleaning:
- Don’t immerse blocks in water
- Wipe with soapy water and spray or wipe down with a virucidal disinfectant such as Clinell wipes or any product from the Dettol disinfectant range
- Ensure blocks are completely dry before stacking away
Note: Hollow blocks are now coated with a cleanable finish.
Outlast equipment for outdoor play
Of course if space and circumstance allow, there is no better place than the outdoors for play and learning. All our Outdoor products are made from Accoya, a waterproof and rot-resistant wood. Any amount of cleaning with soap, water and disinfectant will not adversely affect the integrity of the wood. You may notice that Outlast products weather to a natural grey; however this does not affect their ability to last outdoors for decades.
If outdoor provision is not an option and space and budget allow, consider using our outdoor baby/toddler furniture temporarily indoors. Check out the Outlast toddler collection. All products in this range are fully waterproof and cleanable.
Display board divider panels and shelf backing
Many of our storage shelves and divider panels have a fuzzy surface to enable them to double as storage/dividers and display boards. This material may present some challenges for cleaning. Here’s a few options to help you keep them hygienic:
- Purchase a clear plastic cover to protect the fuzzy surface from liquid. We are currently offering these clear covers at a 30% discount. Contact your account manager for details.
- If you need to purchase new divider panels, consider the bamboo, clear, or translucent options.
As of this year, our soft seating is upholstered with Sileather®, an easy to clean and completely waterproof, puncture-resistant material. If you have older cushions, the new cushions are still compatible with your product. If you would like to order replacements, contact your account manager for details.
If you would prefer a more cleanable option to replace your storage baskets, we are currently offering replacement clear totes or trays at a 30% discount (Note: Clear is the only option available at a discount). Contact your account manager for details.
Sample classrooms using furniture as dividers
How can we follow government guidance to keep our children and staff safe, yet still create a nurturing, friendly environment?
Using our flexible Roomscapes system of connected shelves and divider panels, you can reconfigure your existing furniture to create more areas (bubbles) in your classroom.
To help you visualise how divisions within your rooms could look, we've included some example room layouts.
Contact your account manager with any questions. We would be happy to hear your thoughts and feedback.
