What children learn from animals

Spring is the perfect time to connect with the wonders of life. Most children are fascinated by creatures large and small and especially empathise with baby animals. If we foster this empathy in the early years, it continues into the future. Of course nurseries located near a farm have a special advantage, but even many urban nurseries have a rabbit or guinea pig. I know one city nursery that keeps an old dog, and the children’s favourite responsibility is to comb its fur and fill its water dish!

Information learned from books becomes truly meaningful when it links with personal experience. Children will more naturally care about the world around them if they have observed or cared for animals themselves.
