Keeping old friends
“I have been purchasing equipment from Community Playthings for more than 25 years because of the consistent quality, durability and attention to detail. The constant cleaning necessary in the nursery has little impact on the wood finish. I am still using some 15-year-old mealtime chairs that were revarnished last year and now look as good as new.”

Caring for your purchases

Community Playthings are worth caring for. You already know that our products last for decades. Some of your equipment may have passed from one generation to another–ours has. We recommend a regular programme of maintenance for keeping Community Playthings strong and beautiful. Refer to the specific product guide for more maintenance suggestions. Replacement parts are available through customer service, often at no cost.

Disinfecting

A solution of household cleaning agent is commonly recommended for use as a disinfectant. We have tested this and found that it will not harm Community Playthings products. All products should be rinsed with plain water after any cleaning agent is used.

Unfinished wood

Unit blocks are natural, unvarnished hardwood. If they become soiled, you can wash them. But remember, wood and water are natural enemies. Don't soak; work quickly. Use a stiff brush with dish washing detergent and water. Let the blocks dry thoroughly before next playtime.

Finished wood

The clear wood finish used on all Community Playthings is guaranteed safe for children. To refinish, lightly sand the entire surface. Any wood finish left after sanding need not be removed. Then, following the manufacturer's instructions, apply one or two coats of varnish, using a brand you trust.

Preserved wood

Hard outdoor use may roughen your Hollow blocks. To renew them, sand with fine sandpaper. Follow manufacturer's instructions; apply a coating of good quality boiled linseed oil. Let it penetrate the wood for an hour, then wipe off any excess oil with a clean soft rag. Repeat in 24 hours.

Wheeled toys

Bearings (points where wheels revolve around axles) need regular lubrication, a drop or two of oil once a month. An even better lubricant is powdered graphite. Squirt a bit onto wheel bearings or ball bearings of castors. Wheeled toys will stay quiet and smooth-running for years under this care.

Carpet cleaning

Our carpets are made of stain-resistant nylon fibre. Vacuum carpets frequently. To wash them, lift any corner of the carpet to take it off, shampoo it with carpet cleaner, then replace the carpet when it is dry (on some products, partial disassembly is required for proper re-installation). For stubborn stains, refer to your product guide.
