How to determine the correct chair and table height
Children will work with concentration if seated comfortably at the correct table height.
When buying chairs and tables, consider these two critical factors:
-
The distance between chair seat and table top. This measurement should always be 8" (20 cm) (except for the very smallest and largest chairs—refer to the chart below for details.)
-
The height of the chair seat from the floor. The ideal seat height depends on the child’s size. The lower leg length determines the correct seat height. Sit a child comfortably with feet flat on the floor and knees bent at right angles. Measure from the floor to the bend behind the knee. This is the correct chair height for the child. Refer to the percentage chart below to determine the best size chair for your class.

These simple guidelines will ensure good posture and free arm movement. Table activities can be carried out in comfort—making for a happy, absorbed, and contented child.
The chart below is based on international averages and is provided as a guide. Young children’s measurements vary greatly and change rapidly. If it is at all possible, you should consider purchasing enough chairs of varying heights so you can fit each child appropriately. Six months later it may be necessary to recheck the fit.
